Not every day is the same nor you can always be sure of your safety in the city if your schedule includes daily jogging or walking through sketchy parts of town or boarding the metro at late night or parking your car in a remote parking place.

Mr. Atul Mahajan, Director of Miraz Securitas Pvt Ltd (Delhi’s top security guard company), says that Indian urban citizens can feel safer and more comfortable if they learn some basic personal security tips. Today in this article Mr. Mahajan shares some basic yet crucial personal security tips for everyone.

1. Stay Alert

The number one personal security tip is to stay alert for danger when you are alone and in unsafe surroundings. Avoid making phone calls and sending texts; turn off the music and remove your earplugs. These distractions dull your awareness of your surroundings, making you an easy target.

However, if you’re walking and already on a phone call and have reached a remote location then tell your location to the caller and turn your phone location from setting. Stay alert, slow your speed, listen and watch for any unusual thing, if you feel uneasy or sense some danger turn back and return to a place where there are more people.

If you are in a remote parking zone, then switch off your car music, listen and see every corner of the parking carefully, wait for 2-3 minutes prior you roll down your window or get down of your car. If you sense uneasiness then immediately leave the parking without getting down of your car.

2. Be Discreet

Don’t wear flashy jewelry or carry expensive items if you are on foot. Don’t reveal the contents of your purse or wallet when purchasing a metro ticket, buying coconut outside park, or buying grocery from a vendor. You never know who is watching so be discreet.

3. Avoid Uncomfortable Situations

Don’t get into an elevator alone with someone who makes you feel uncomfortable, and avoid passing parked cars or vans with idling engines. Stay away from dimly lit alleys and secluded parking lots. If such situations are unavoidable, consider asking a friend to accompany you.

4. Always make a point to check cab door’s child lock switch

If you board a cab with child lock on, you cannot open the door from inside unless the driver wishes. In other words, you will get trapped inside the cab. Hence make a point to always check cab doors for child lock. If there is a lock – do not board the cab.

5. Tell Family & Friends Your Itinerary

Let your loved ones know where you’ll be and when you expect to be home. If something should happen and you don’t arrive, it gives them or the police a good place to start a search.

6. Get a Dog

A dog is a terrific security measure for both home and personal protection. Dogs bark and attract attention when they’re uneasy, something thieves and other predators hope to avoid. Moreover, dogs are exceptionally loyal companions in a scuffle. They become an excellent companion when you go jogging and walk.

7. Choose Your Footwear Wisely

This is a key area to look after. Having a good footwear will ensure that you avoid any sort of slips or falls while running, jogging. While at the same time if you see yourself trapped in some unwanted situation. Having a good pair of shoes makes it easier for you to escape smoothly from any odd situation.

Perhaps your best mechanism that can help you avoid any kind of trap that can set up by a potential stalker. Walking with a straight and composed posture helps you to appear as a strong and confident person.
